The Curious Case of Smile.jpg

I first met in person with Mary E. in the summer of 2007. I had arranged with her husband of fifteen years, Terence, to see her for an interview. Mary had initially agreed, since I was not a newsman but rather an amateur writer gathering information for a few early college assignments and, if all went according to plan, some pieces of fiction. We scheduled the interview for a particular weekend when I was in Chicago on unrelated business, but at the last moment Mary changed her mind and locked herself in the couple’s bedroom, refusing to meet with me.

For half an hour, I sat with Terence as we camped outside the bedroom door, I listening and taking notes while he attempted fruitlessly to calm his wife. The things Mary said made little sense, but fit into the pattern I was expecting: though I could not see her, I could tell from her voice that she was crying, and more often than not her objections to speaking with me centered around an incoherent diatribe on her dreams – her nightmares.

Terence apologized profusely when we ceased the exercise, and I did my best to take it in stride; recall that I wasn’t a reporter in search of a story, but merely a curious young man in search of information. Besides, I thought at the time, I could perhaps find another, similar case if I put my mind and resources to it.

Mare E. was the sysop for a small Chicago-based Bulletin Board System in 1992 when she first encountered smile.jpg and her life changed forever. She and Terence had been married for only five months. Mary was one of an estimated 400 people who saw the image when it was posted as a hyperlink on the BBS, though she is the only one who has spoken openly about the experience. The rest have remained anonymous, or are perhaps dead.

In 2005, when I was only in tenth grade, smile.jpg was first brought to my attention by my burgeoning interest in web-based phenomena; Mary was the most often cited victim of what is sometimes referred to as “Smile.dog,” the being smile.jpg is reputed to display.

What caught my interest (other than the obvious macabre elements of the cyber-legend and my proclivity toward such things) was the sheer lack of information, usually to the point that people don’t believe it even exists other than as a rumor or hoax. It is unique because, though the entire phenomenon centers on a picture file, that file is no where to be found on the internet; certainly many photo-manipulated simulacra litter the web, showing up with the most frequency on sites such as the image-board 4chan, particularly the /x/-focused paranormal sub board.

It is suspected that these are fakes because they do not have the effect the true smile.jpg is believed to have, namely sudden onset temporal lobe epilepsy and acute anxiety. This purpoted reaction in the viewer is one of the reasons the phantom-like smile.jpg is regarded with such disdain, since it is patently absurd, though depending on whom you ask, the reluctance to acknowledge smile.jpg’s existence might be just as much out of fear as it is out of disbelief.

Neither smile.jpg nor Smile.dog is mentioned anywhere on Wikipedia, though the website features articles on such other, perhaps more scandalous shocksites such as gotse (hello.jpg) or 2girls1cup; any attempt to create a page pertaining to smile.jpg is summarily deleted by any of the encyclopedia’s many admins.

Encounters with smile.jpg are the stuff of internet legend. Mary E.’s story is not unique; there are unverified rumors of smile.jpg showing up in the early days of usenet and even one persistent tale that in 2002 a hacker flooded the forums of humor and satire website Something Awful with a deluge of Smile.dog pictures, rendering almost of the forum’s users at the time epileptic. It is also said that in the mid-to-late 90s that smile.jpg circulated on Usenet and as an attachment of a chain email with the subject like “SMILE!! GOD LOVES YOU!”

Yet despite the huge exposure these stunts would generate, there are very few people who admit to having experienced any of them and no trace of the file or any link has ever been discovered. Those who claim to have seen smile.jpg often weakly joke that they were far too busy to save a copy of the picture to their hard drive.

However, all alleged victims offer the same description of the photo: a dog-like creature (usually described as appearing similar to a Siberian Husky), illuminated by the flash of the camera, sits in a dim room, the only background detail visible being a human hand extending from the darkness near the left side of the frame. The hand is empty, but is usually described as “beckoning.” Of course, most attention is given to the dog (or dog-creature, as some victims are more certain than others about what they claim to have seen). The muzzle of the beast is reputedly split in a wide grin, revealing two rows of very white, very straight, very sharp, and very human-looking teeth. This is, of course, not a description given immediately after viewing the picture, but rather a recollection of the victims, who claim to have seen the picture endlessly repeated in their mind’s eye during the time they are, in reality, having epileptic fits.

These fits are reported to continue indeterminably, often while the victims sleep, resulting in very vivid and disturbing nightmares. These may be treated with medication, though in some cases it is more effective than others. Mary E., I assumed, was not on effective medication.

That was why, after my visit to her apartment in 2007, I sent out feelers to several folklore- and urban legend-orientated newsgroups, websites, and mailing lists, hoping to find the name of a supposed victim of smile.jpg who felt more interested in talking about his experiences. For a time, nothing happened and at length I forgot completely about my pursuits, since I had begun my freshman year of college and was quite busy. Mary contacted me via email, however, near the beginning of March 2008.

Subj: Last summer’s interview

Dear Mr. L.,

I am incredibly sorry about my behavior last summer when you came to interview me. I hope you understand that it was no fault of yours, but rather my own problems that led me to act out as I did. I realized that I could have handled the situation more decorously; however, I hope you will forgive me. At the time, I was afraid.

You see, for fifteen years I have been haunted by smile.jpg. Smile.dog comes to me in my sleep every night. I know that sounds silly, but it is true. There is an ineffable quality about my dreams, my nightmares, that makes them completely unlike any real dreams I have ever had. I do not move and do not speak. I simply look ahead, and the only thing ahead of me is the scene from that horrible picture. I see the beckoning hand, and I see Smile.dog. It talks to me.

I thought for a long time about my options. I could show it to a stranger, a coworker… I could even show it to Terence, as much as the idea disgusted me. And what would happen then? Well, if Smile.dog kept its word, I could sleep. Yet, if it lied, what would I do? And who was to say something worse would not come for me if I did as the creature asked?

So, I did nothing for fifteen years, though I kept the diskette hidden amongst my things. Every night for fifteen years Smile.dog has come to me in my sleep and demanded that I spread the word. For fifteen years I have stood strong, though there have been hard times. Many of my fellow victims on the BBS board where I first encountered smile.jpg stopped posting; I heard some of them committed suicide. Others remained completely silent, simply disappearing off the face of the web. They are the ones I worry about the most. I sincerely hope you will forgive me, Mr. L., but last summer when you contacted me and my husband about an interview I was near the breaking point. I did not care if Smile.dog was lying or not; I wanted it to end. You were a stranger, someone I had no connection with, and i thought I would not feel sorrow when you took the diskette as part of your research and sealed your fate. Before you arrived, I realized what I was doing: I was plotting to ruin your life.

I could not stand the thought, and in fact I still cannot. I am ashamed, Mr. L., and I hope that this warning will dissuade you from further investigation of smile.jpg. You may in time encounter someone who is, if not weaker than I, then wholly more depraved, someone who will not hesitate to follow Smile.dog’s orders. Stop while you are still whole.

Sincerely,
Mary E.

Terence contacted me later that month with the news that his wife had killed herself. While cleaning up the various things she’d left behind, closing email accounts and the like, he happened upon the above message. He was a man in shambles; he wept as he told me to listen to his wife’s advice. He’d found the diskette, he revealed, and burned it until it was nothing but a stinking pile of blackened plastic. The part that most disturbed him, however, was how the diskette had hissed as it melted. Like some sort of animal, he said.

I will admit that I was a little uncertain about how to respond to this. At first, I thought, perhaps it was a joke, with the couple belatedly playing with the situation in order to get a rise out of me, but a quick check of several Chicago newspapers’ online obituaries, however, proved that Mary E. was indeed dead. There was, of course, no mention of suicide in the article.

I decided that, for at least a time, I would not further pursue the subject of smile.jpg, especially since I had finals coming up at the end of May. But the world has odd ways of testing up. Almost a full year after I’d returned from my disastrous interview with Mary E., I received another email:

To: jml@****.com
From: elzahir82@****.com
Subj: smile

Hello
I found your e-mail address thru a mailing list your profile said you are interested in smiledog. I have saw it it is not as bad as every one says I have sent it to you here. Just spreading the word.

:)

The final line chilled me to the bone. According to my email client there was one file attachment called, naturally, smile.jpg. I considered downloading it for some time. It was most likely a fake, I imagined, and even if it weren’t I was never wholly convinced of smile.jpg’s peculiar powers. Mary E.’s account had shaken me, yes, but she was probably mentally unbalanced anyway. After all, how could a single image do what smile.jpg was said to accomplish? What sort of creature was it that could break one’s mind with only the power of the eye?

And if such things were patently absurd, then why did the legend exist at all? If I downloaded the image, if I looked at it, and if Mary turned out to be correct, if Smile.dog came to me in my dreams demanding I spread the word, what would I do? Would I live my life as Mary had, fighting against the urge to give in until I died? Or would I simply spread the word, eager to be put to rest? And if I chose the latter route, how could I do it? Whom would I burden in turn? If I went through with my earlier intention to write a short article about smile.jpg, I decided, I could attach it as evidence, and anyone who read the article, anyone who took interest, would be affected. And, even assuming the smile.jpg attached to the email was genuine, would I be capricious enough to save myself in that manner?

Not gonna lie, I stared at the picture for several seconds, and the dog’s face kinda… I dunno, seemed like it was moving. Well, not moving. More like rippling, like water. Freaky stuff, man.
Good pasta. 4/5.

Man, this pasta always creeps the hell outta me. I had seen the pic before and yet, chills to the spine!! I am sure it would be less disturbing without the setting, cause itself isn’t that bad. The hand is meh, but the dog OMFG. I love to be scared, but please, dog, stay outta my dreams.
Well done pasta, well done.

This is awful. Not the story, the story was enjoyable and creepy. The picture. How do you even manipulate a photo of a dog to look that FREAKY? God i am gonna have nightmares about this.

Now this story is kind of a weird case, same with the picture. The story and the picture by themselves arnt exactly quite that scary. However, together they make a shocking combo. Smile.jpg, oldy but a goody. Thanx for adding the story to your ever growing archives.

This will give me the HARDEST night of sleeping ever. When I first found this I skipped to the comments to see if it was good (which I no longer do), and saw the pic. I was like, “What the heck?” But now, even though I still knew what the pic was, the story creeped me out. This is…brilliant. 8.5/10 or 9/10…

I came here looking for an interesting computer story, I found this, as it’s the only one in the archive right now, and skipped right to the comments to find it it was good. I may be a wimp, but the picture sent shivers down my spine without the story. I read a few comments, and went up to read. I can honestly say, I’m having to turn the lights on now. This is going to be a long night.

I read the first few paragraphs and assumed there’d be a picture in the rest, so I scrolled down quickly to check. I went past the picture and only got a short glimpse of it, but it freaked me out. It’s daytime and I have all the lights on, but I’m not planning on reading this entire thing anytime soon.

Do not read this. Don’t even click the link. If your reading the comments as I did you are lucky. Do not look at the image, don’t google it. Don’t do anything. Close the tab and never come back. Save yourself while you can.

This is easily one of the best pastas I’ve read so far! The build up was perfect – the inclusion of the emails was really well done especially the elzahir one. When it all pieced together at the end I realised I was about to be shown the smiledog picture about a milliesecond before I actually saw it. I’m not gonna lie; bricks were shitted.

I really don’t get the big deal. The story was great. I would definitely give it a 4/5 easily. I just don’t get the picture. It’s not all that scary. It’s just a husky with a human smile. It’s not all that scary. Of course I am reading this at 4:29 in the afternoon while it’s broad daylight, so my opinion may change come night time.

Idk, but to me, it’s not that creepy of a pic. Great story though.

My friend led me to this pasta today, as I read it aloud so my girlfriend could follow along, we got to the top half of just the photo without seeing anything, I decided to keep my screen like that until I finished the entire pasta. When I scroll I was expecting something horrifying, only to find a zany looking dog with human teeth and a hand and some blood prints. Good story, but as fellow horror/fake snuff/gore/pasta geeks, the photo did nothing for either of us, we set it as our desktop back round. I’d like to know the ages of the people who were actually SH*TTING THEMSELVES.

@moonlitbel @me! 2 nights ago i came across this story…. but it was buried deep in a site. it was different than this picture… it was less human teeth… more like long sharp fangs… and the eyes were bright blue… the picture had a crease on the top left corner. it had more of a greenish tinge to it. also.. the background was more of a closed in porch…im not saying it was the picture… but i haven’t been able to shake it… and i keep seeing the dog around in life… like ill turn a corner and it will be there… but then in a blink it’ll be gone… just enough to scare me… this picture look like it was photo shopped, and put human teeth on… and Ive been sick and getting earth shattering migraines… idk what it is… but there’s something to this…

I have seen the real Smile.jpg it depicts a dog with a wide toothed, bloody grotesque smile. in addition the shot is poorly illuminated, the dog is more wolf than anything, it bears mangled, twisted claws, and has horns so gnarled and twisted that all you can think of is the horror of an imminent rending impalement.
The true Smile.jpg was created for the sole purpose of playing into every last survival instinct programmed deep in our minds. I see the twisted creature every night. i assure you this photo is not Smile.jpg.

I won’t lie, as I was finishing reading, and saw the very tip of the photo appear, I sat there and said to my self “Fuck. Am I gonna look at or jump to the bottom of the page and skip it?” The photo in its self is only slightly odd, not really disturbing, and the same for the story, but when you have that build up, and catch a glimpse of the top as you are finishing, it really gets your stomach twisting in a un/pleasantly frightening fashion. 5/5

I’ve seen this smile.jpg but it’s not as freaky as the one in which the dog’s face is placed on human shoulders, some white shroud resembling human hair on either side. The muzzle of the dog appears to be almost bare-bone white, with the teeth forming a truly evil smile. The eyes bore into you, giving the impression that you are indeed staring at a living thing. The background is nearly black save for a large, lit window, presumably showing to outside the room. The entire picture is a blood-red. THAT smile.jpg haunts me.

Veteran scary shit guy here.

First pic, while filling me with a sense of paranoia, and fear of dogs, is not THAT bad. The eyes are scarier than that grin. I can’t even really see the hand. Never could. Really, it’s just creepy. It is, however, hard to look at.

The other one, now that makes me feel ill. It’s easier to look at, but scares me more. Staring at that makes me feel a sense of dread, and like someone is gonna walk up behind me.

Really, while pathetic on it’s own, while paired with a story and another pic, it becomes not perhaps scary, but the most unsettling thing I have ever seen.

It’s 1:39am and I read the story and saw the top of the picture and made 2 people look at it before I did. Regretting that now <.< Saw both pictures. Worst part is my computer automatically just scrolled up to the top and I just saw both again.

9/10 Very cool legend. Love that you can’t find any previous info on it in the early web pages, because it makes you wonder if they ever existed, or if is all a hoax. And that for me is the mark of a good pasta.

I was also among the ones who weren’t sure whether to look at the picture or not and just skipped to the comments section before finally looking at the picture.

The one posted with the story isn’t scary AT ALL.
AT.
ALL.

The one in the comments is a little scary when you first see it but nothing to piss yourself over.

I liked the storytelling in this, and reading the comments are hilarious. I honestly have never been creeped but the picture (any version I’ve seen) and thus it would take the real thing to shake me, but none the less a good story to go around a mediocre shopped image.

As soon as I moved my tab down enough to see the picture, My Ipod changed to a song with a clicking metronome. With every click of the metronome my body had a fear tinge in time. Nice pasta, with the soundtrack. I dont know how it would’ve affected me without it. hahaha.

I stared at this picture many times and figuring out its creepiness…..although it doesn’t seem to affect me. The image still lingers in my brain and it’s bothersome at thing with the gruesome smile, for me if we’re saying something it would say something like this, ” I’m gonna haunt your dreams.” I got nightmares but im emotionless to this. Still lingers still scares….good luck

Found this on wikipedia about the second email and its sender. I got curious if elzahir meant anything and it does i suppose. It was written by an argentinan so ‘the zahir’ would actually be el zahir…: “In the story, Zahir is a person or an object that has the power to create an obsession in everyone who sees it, so that the affected person perceives less and less of reality and more and more of the Zahir, at first only while asleep, then at all times.” good story!!

I have been researching a lot of creepy pastas but I’ve honestly gotta say, between this and the Slender Man along with the Rake, I’m an insomniac as it is. This certainly isn’t going to help… I’ve been on a drawing fit lately and a friend linked me here. She said that if I really wanted to draw something frightening or disturbing, this would be the best place to gather inspiration. And holy sh*t was she right!

P.S.

The reason the second photo would be more easily remembered even with less viewing time, is due to the bright color. It’ll remain in your subcontious for a very long time. Red (certain shades/hues) combined with a darker red and black surrounding creates a very deep seated fear in the back of ones mind, and can be used very effectively with the right setting to create that sense of absolute terror. Loved this pasta, enjoyed every second of this website!

I am reading this at 12:21 whilst listening to the radio. I got to the end, and as soon as I scrolled down to the picture posted with the story, that shrill buzzing that plays over the radio when they are testing the emergency system played. I nearly shit myself because of that. Good story, the picture isn’t that scary on its own, but coupled with the tale (and in my case a very rude, penetrating buzzing) it becomes quite disconcerting to say the least. 5/5

The email address of that random guy, elzahir, must be a reference to the book El Zahir. It’s about a thing that can create mental obsessions in people that start by coming in their sleep. Somebody must have discovered this already…

Please, you must help me. Anyone, please. My daughter, only 8 years old, needs help. I would love to get right to it and say why, but I’m getting ahead of myself. Let me explain.
when my daughter, Clair, was five, her father left the family, being an only child and young it tore her apart. I tried to do the best I could for her, but I just couldn’t cheer her up. Her father was a beautiful and happy man, to this day I still have no idea why he left us. But I’m getting off track. Naturally like any mother would, I got her a therapist. She slowly became more happy, and was not as gloomy. She continued to get better over the three years.
Once we have been doing this for the three years, the therapist has been acting weird, he always seemed dense and sweaty. Very suspicious considering he seemed like a normal guy when I first signed my daughter up. I ignored it and continued to send my daughter to him. Though that seemed to be a mistake.
One day, the last day I let her go to the therapist, I picked her up and she was hysteric, I could barley see her face through her tears and messy hair. When I asked what happened, the therapist shook his head and said sorry for something, then left like he was in a hurry.
I took my daughter home and calmed her down, and once she seemed secure, I asked her what happened. Clair looked up at me and told me that he made her look at the, “happy puppy”. She began to cry again, so I left her alone and stopped asking about it.
That night, she woke up around 3AM, which is odd because she is a very heavy sleeper. I came in to help her, and she screamed at me that the “puppy will not leave me alone”. She continued to repeat this over and over, and it took me almost four hours or so to make her stop.
Now angry that my child was going through such feelings of horror, I tried to contact the therapist the next day in hopes of getting an answer, only to find out that he had quite his job that day. Having nowhere to go, I went here, to the internet and began to research. I found out about smile.dog, and looked into it.
I was looking through the pictures and articles of information when Clair came in and looked at what I was doing, I had no idea she was there in the room with me. I had multiple pictures of the smile.dog up, testing my reaction. I admit that they were a bit scary, but nothing gave me the effect that people said “the original” would. Clair saw these, and immediately collapsed and began crying. She said something along the lines off, “No mommy, don’t look at it! Stop it! You don’t have to! NO!”
I began to worry and came a bit paranoid, what was this doing to her? Had she seen the original? I have a theory that the therapist had somehow gotten a hold of the original, and if this passage above is true, felt the need to pass it on. But how could some one be as heartless to show it to an 8 year old girl?
Anyway, I’m in need of help, and this is the first place I have came. She still says that every night the “happy puppy” visits her and yells at her while she is sleeping. I just want it to stop, dose anyone know how to end this?
And no, I have not downloaded the picture to my hard drive, I fear what would happen.
